Opposition, boycotting elections, holds unsanctioned meeting in Baku
The opposition powers, boycotting the upcoming elections, have held an unsanctioned meeting.

The action was not interfered by the police.

The Azadlyg opposition bloc, including the Popular Front Party, Liberal Party and Civil Development Party, has decided to boycott the presidential elections.

Several other opposition parties, including Musavat, Democratic Party of Azerbaijan, National Independence Party, Adalyat Party, Civil Solidarity Party, Democratic Reforms Party, Classical Popular Front Party and Azadlyg party announced that they will not take part in the elections.

According to Novosti-Azerbaijan, the protest included hundreds of oppositionists. Representatives of international organizations, diplomatic missions, as well as foreign mass medias, observed the actions.

The protest was held in front of the head office of the Musavat opposition party.

On Saturday the opposition powers, boycotting the elections, were planning to hold a forum on the presidential elections in Azerbaijan. The event was to be held in the head office of the Musavat party. Due to the high number of the forum participants, most of them could not find a place in the office. Therefore, the event organizers decided to continue the action in the street.

Speaking during the action, Ali Kerimli, chairman of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan, Ali Aliyev, chairman of the Citizen and Development Party, Eldar Namazov, president of the public forum "For Azerbaijan", Avez Temirkhan, chairman of the Liberal Party of Azerbaijan, Arif Hajili, head of the central office of the Musavat party and leader of the Musavat party Isa Gambar voiced their opinions on the established sociopolitical and electoral situation in Azerbaijan.

They stated the correctness of their decision to boycott elections. They noted that the situation in the country before elections is not democratic and normal conditions have not been created for conduction of fair, transparent and democratic elections.

They noted that people are also boycotting the elections and, therefore, they are passive and not displaying interest in the process. In this sense, the decision of the opposition coincides with the decision of the people.

The opposition leaders also announced that they will continue the struggle for country's democratization and the result of their combat will become the restoration of democratic principles, after which the democratic elections will be held.

By results of the action they adopted an appeal to the country's public. The document calls on the people to be active in boycotting the elections and struggle for their rights.

Ancient underpass discovered near Icheri Sheher

An ancient underpass, dated back to the 19th century, has recently been discovered while holding reconstruction at Vahid park", said Kamil Ibrahimov, doctor of historical sciences and head researcher of the Department of the Icheri Sheher historical-architectural reserve in his interview to Day.Az.

"We have not yet sent an expedition, but workers, reconstructing the park, were able to walk about 200 meters by the underpass. They could go further, as the underpass is free, but it was difficult without special outfit and equipment. As for the direction of the underpass, I would like to note that it turns to the road. The height of the underpass is of a man height and width is about half a meter", said the scientist.

According to him, this is not an old establishment and dates to approximately 1870-1880s. But he found it difficult to make any statements before thorough studies are held.

He said he can only voice a supposition about the appearance of this underpass.

"By medieval sources, Baku had two rows of fortress walls. Only the first row is preserved today, while the second one is at a distance of 25-30 meters from the first one. There was a ditch between these two walls, filled with water and used for defense.

Later, in around the 1770s, Baku commandant Foven, decided to build an original park in the place of the ditch. The ditch was filled with the ground and a unique garden with exotic plants was erected in its place.

As for the second wall, Baku did not need defense anymore and it was decided to break it down. Russian Duma decided to gain profit from breaking the wall. According to archive data, the wall was sold in parts to the Icheri Sheher population, who used it for construction of their houses.

I think the underpass was built at that time, as there had been a water-filled ditch before and there could not be a tunnel in that place. But this is just what I think it to be. I would like to note that people knew about this underpass in the 1950s, when the reconstruction of the park was carried out. I will try to find our this information and inform you about the results of the work."

According to the scientist, a well, dated to the 16-17th centuries, was also found by accident near small fortress walls.

"I think this well was used not for storing water but for household needs. Inside each building in the old Baku there was a small yard where such wells were built", concluded Ibrahimov.

By the information, in several minutes of fire exchange, Shamilov, continuing the fire, raised on attack. In the result, he managed to terminate two soldiers. Shamilov died.
The enemy managed to take the killed soldiers from the fire exchange zone, while Shamilov's body was left near positions of the Armenian armed forces and the Defense Ministry of Azerbaijan tries to get him out of there.

Day.Az has received a letter from a reader, which says that the biggest gas company Gazprom helps restore the gas supply to Nagorno Karabakh de-facto.

According to it, the link on the map is posted on the official website of ArmRosgazprom in the section GAS-TRANSPORTATION MAP of Armenia.

By following this link we can see a gas transportation map of Armenia, which fixes that ArmRosgazprom is engaged in ensuring gas supplies of Nagorno Karabakh.

It should be noted that the Armenian-Russian closed stock company ArmRosgazprom was created by the Energy Ministry of Armenia, Gazprom, ITERA International Energy L.L.C (ITERA) on the basis of an agreement of August 30 of 1997. The society was founded for the term of 50 years. The term of the activity can be prolonged by the mutual consent of the shareholders.

Gazprom has the biggest share in the founding capital of ArmRosgazprom. It owns 67.94% of the founding capital, Armenian government holds 26.23% and ITERA 5.83%.

In other words it can be stated that company ArmRosgazprom is in fact owned by Gazprom and Gazprom, violating all international norms, promotes the development of the gas sector of Nagorno Karabakh, considering that Nagorno Karabakh belongs to Armenia.

Gazprom is notably the biggest gas company in the world. The government of Russia owns the control shares in Gazprom - 50.002%.

Another notable fact is that on July 3 of this year Russia and Azerbaijan agreed to initiate talks on provisions of the purchase of Azerbaijani gas by Russia.

"Azerbaijan will become another country to sell gas to Gazprom, while earlier it was Azerbaijan which bought gas from us", said Gazprom President Alexei Miller, adding that Gazprom is ready to cooperate with Azerbaijan.

How can we sell Azerbaijani gas to Russia, when the government of Russia provides de-facto assistance to the restoration of the gas supplies in Nagorno Karabakh? Who can guarantee that Azerbaijani gas will not go to Nagorno Karabakh via Armenia? How can we trust to this gas structure, which fully ignores the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan? Or, perhaps, Gazprom, in fact owning ArmRusgazprom, forgot that Nagorno Karabakh belongs to Azerbaijan?

In this sense, we call on the Foreign Ministry of Azerbaijan, the Cabinet of Ministers, Azerigaz and certainly the Azerbaijani embassy to Russia, which demonstrates quick reaction to such issues, to interfere with this problem and give an adequate response to Gazprom for this issue is seriously bound to the strategic interests of our country.

The Times: “Muslim Magomaev was an event, from the moment he took to the stage”

The Times published an article about our compatriot Muslim Magomaev, Azerbaijan’s embassy in the Great Britain told APA.

The Times called Muslim Magomaev as the “Soviet Sinatra”. “Muslim Magomaev was a hugely popular Azerbaijani singer whose talents embraced traditional song, operatic arias and jazz standards and who rejoiced in being known as the “Soviet Sinatra”. Magomaev was born in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, into a family of talented Azeri performers. From an early age Magomaev displayed clear musical talent and studied music first at the school attached to the Baku Conservatoire, and later at the conservatoire itself, specializing in piano and composition. Those who remember his earliest performances in Moscow say that he was more than a singer; he was an event, from the moment he took to the stage. His winning of official approval so early in his career meant that he was able to travel and work abroad — at La Scala, Milan. After Milan he went to Paris to work at the Olympia Theatre”.
Then the authors are speaking about his creative work and his repertoire. “From 1975 to 1989 Magomaev was artistic director of the Azerbaijan State Symphony Orchestra, and continued to give public performances. He was as proud of his native Azerbaijan. His records sold more than four million copies, and he maintained his broad repertoire, including opera, love songs, jazz, and traditional Russian and popular songs. He also composed music for the theatre and film”.
