Azerbaijan International Tourism and Travel Exhibition kicks off in Azerbaijan |

Iteca Caspian (Azerbaijan) and ITE Group Plc (UK) are holding the 7th International Tourism and Travel Exhibition (ATIF-2008) in Baku on April 16-18, 2008. Abulfaz Garayev, Azerbaijan’s Minister of Culture and Tourism, told the opening ceremony that 28 countries are represented in the show while there were 10 countries last year. He added that a number of new projects will be presented during the showcase. He spoke on the rapid development of tourism in the country, saying 107 hotels have been certificated by the ministry. Farid Mammadov, Director of Iteca Caspian, added that ATIF-2008 will showcase airlines and air agencies, bus tours, tour operators, active and adventurous recreation, sports tourism, education tourism, airport services and other services from Turkey, Switzerland, Greece, Russia, Czech republic, Austria, Italy, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, UAE, Malaysia, Egypt, the Maldives etc.
Azerbaijan will be represented by recreation centers, hotels and tourism companies operating in Nabran, Guba, Lenkeran, Sheki, Shamakhi, Shemkir and other regions. The event will coincide with the 2nd Hotel Business Showcase (HotelExpo). The events are supported by Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, World Tourism Organization, Azerbaijan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Azerbaijan export and Investment promotion Foundation (AzPromo). |

3rd European forum of Azerbaijani Students to be held in May |

The 3rd forum of Azerbaijani students will be held in Brussels in May, said a source from the Forum of the Azerbaijani students of Europe, according to Day.Az. In the framework of the forum, it is planned to hold a briefing in the NATO headquarters in Brussels and the meeting of Azerbaijani students with several officials of the alliance. According to the source,unlike the arrangements of the Forum, held in German Bundestag and French Senate, which were of regional nature, the third forun is pan-European, aiming at undertaking important organizational steps of the Azerbaijani students. It should be reminded that the secretary general of the forum Vusal Mamedov told in his interview that the event is planned to be held on May 26-27 and the talks with European parliament representatives are carried out for the purpose. |

Over 6,300 foreign students studying in Azerbaijan |

Azerbaijan`s ministry of education said in 2007-2008 academic years, more than 6,300 foreign students, including from Turkey, Russia, Germany, USA, Iran, India, Egypt, Canada, and Jordan are studying in the country`s higher education institutions. According to the ministry, 1,228 students are studying at the Baku State University, 522 at the Azerbaijan State Oil Academy, 706 at the Azerbaijan Medical University, 449 at the Gafgaz University, 732 at the Azerbaijan State Economic University. |

Armenian car thief goes on trial in Khachmaz, Azerbaijan |

A decision was passed yesterday on the case of car-thief Igor Bagiyan, Armenian native, Day.Az reports with reference to ANS-Press. Judge Meherrem Allahverdiyev sentenced Igor Bagiyev to four years and five months of imprisonment in the maximum security penal colony. He is charged under two articles of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan. It should be noted that Igor Rubenovich Bagiyan, born in 1979, was detained on October 9 of the last year. Working as a security guard in one of the Nabran resort, he stole hi-jacked a car in August 2007 and later had a car accident, crashing into into Zhiguli. Bagiyan was detained in the Baku port, when trying to get to Turkmenistan illegally. |
