Berti Vogts is the new Azerbaijan coach PDF Print E-mail

Former Scotland manager Berti Vogts has been named as the new manager of Azerbaijan a month after resigning as the Nigerian coach.

The 61-year-old replaces Gjoko Hadzievski, who was sacked following the team's poor performances in their Euro 2008 qualifiers.

Azerbaijan finished bottom of group A, winning just one of their 12 games.

Vogts has a vast history as an international manager. He led Germany to win Euro 96 but stepped down only two years later following the side's quarter-final exit from the World Cup in France.

Vogts then became manager of the Kuwait national team. He resigned after six months to take the managerial position with Scotland.

Poor performances under his guidance led to widespread criticism, which, though some pundits blamed on a poor quality squad, Scotland fans called for his dismissal.

In November 2004, after failing to qualify for the 2006 World Cup, Vogts resigned as manager with a year and a half still on his contract.

Vogts, who stepped down as the Nigerian coach last month following their exit from the African Nations Cup, is expected to sign a two-year contract with Azerbaijan and lead them through the qualifying stages for the 2010 World Cup.

Azerbaijan have been placed in Group Four for the qualifying rounds and will come up against Vogt's native Germany as well as Russia, Liechtenstein, Wales and Finland.
